Peer Counselor Program

Meet Your Peer Counselor

If you are pregant or currently breastfeeding and would like extra support, a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor can help. Peer Counselors are women who are or have been on WIC and have successfully breastfed. Ask about a Breastfeeding WIC Peer Counselor at your next appointment. Learn below how they can help you successfully breastfeed!

NM WIC Peer Counselor Provides:

  • Work one-to-one with WIC families
  • Give free lactation support to WIC clients
  • Offer service for up to one and half years.
  • Provides virtual, phone, text, and clinic support

NM WIC Peer Counselor Helps With:

  • Basic breastfeeding support.
  • Latching and positioning.
  • Tips for making enough milk. (for scheduled separation)
  • Refer to Designated Breastfeeding Expert when high breastfeeding challenges occur.

    During your WIC appointment a WIC staff memeber will connect you with your local peer counselor.

I kept getting comments such as “Why don’t you give formula to fill up your baby?” “Baby is just using you as a pacifier.” With so many bad comments, they left me overwhelmed and confused towards exclusively breastfeeding. Once I started working with my Peer Counselor, many of my doubts were clarified and she abolished many myths. She was able to support my journey with breastfeeding that I knew I wanted and showed me how it was possible.

I was having a lot of pain when I first started breastfeeding. My peer counselor knew right away I was having latch issues. She also suspected a higher risk issue was going on as well. She connected me to a Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE), who is someone more trained with complex issues. I am still breastfeeding my baby 3 months now, and will continue.

I am very grateful for the WIC Peer Counseling program that provides breastfeeding support. I never imagined that I would breastfeed. I give thanks to my local peer counselor who was with me in the bad and good moments. She answered my calls even on days when she wasn’t supposed to be working. She was there for me when I had doubts. She helped me overcome breast pain and showed me how to get my baby to latch. We tried a few things that were new to me, and they worked!  To see my baby full and statisfied gave me the strength to keep breastfeeding him, knowing I was providing the healthiest milk.
